The Country Kitchen (Great Lakes Books)
Published in Paperback by Wayne State Univ Pr (T) (November, 1992)
Average review score:

Michigan's answer to MFK FisherMildly intrigued by the title of this book, I bought a used copy...a flea market in Lunenberg, Mass. this past fall. It turned out to be a real gem. Superbly well-written, it weaves together accounts of the author's family life in rural Michigan at the turn of the Twentieth Century with recipes of the food the family ate. The effect is very much along the lines of MFK Fisher's books about her life in France. But unlike Mrs. Fisher, Ms. Lutes is no self-conscious bohemian. Very much a woman of her time and place, she is nonetheless independent, intelligent, and very funny. That is, there is nothing genteel and Victorian about her, and nothing pretentious. She is modern, one of us. Who was Della T. Lutes? Hard to tell at this late date. My 1965 edition of "The Reader's Encyclopedia" has no entry on her. Amazon.com has only this title for sale. But she must have had a considerable following in her day. My copy of "The Country Kitchen," printed in 1948, was apparently the 22nd printing of a book originally published in 1936. The flyleaf lists four other titles by her. I gave "The Country Kitchen" to my wife, a chef, for Christmas. She has yet to stop raving about it. More than a cook book, a culinary history or a social history, "The Country Kitchen" qualifies as capital-L Literature.

Crawdad Creek
Published in Mass Market Paperback by National Geographic (August, 2002)
Average review score:

"Come Discover the Treasures of Crawdad Creek""Come discover the treasures of Crawdad Creek" - that is what it says on the back of the dust jacket. It is a simple invitation, but it opens up a wonderful world to children.
With today's busy schedules, kids don't have time to just be kids. This book is a reminder of the treasures to be found in the world around us and that we need to let children have the freedom to explore it.
The story is sweet and fun, but the beautiful illustrations are what make this book truly remarkable.

Crimson Snow (Lake Champlain Mysteries, Book 1)
Published in Paperback by Thomas Nelson (January, 1995)
Average review score:

I am not a fan of mystery novels, but this was exceptional. The characters are very real and believable. As the story unfolds, the reader is drawn to ponder the smaller mysteries behind the lives of each character, making it a very enjoyable read. The personal spiritual applications are not heavy handed, but the Truth is there woven throughout the developing plot. I look forward to the next installment of the "Lake Champlain Mysteries", and am convinced you will too

Deep Woods Frontier: A History of Logging in Northern Michigan (Great Lakes Books)
Published in Paperback by Wayne State Univ Pr (T) (December, 1989)
Average review score:

Great History of the Heydays of Northern Michigan LoggingHighly recommended if you have any interest in the timber industry's history. Book includes commentary on the results of some poor management practices and the attempts to farm clear-cuts. A good history of logging and the lessons learned. Lots of interesting characters and stories, as well. Obviously a well researched book.

Destination Lake Tahoe: The Story Behind the Scenery
Published in Paperback by KC Publications (June, 2003)
Average review score:

Informative for anyoneI have enjoyed other books in the "story behind the scenery" series and wanted to share with my children the riches of Lake Tahoe before we go there for another vacation. This book was wonderful! We have been there before, but we learned things about Lake Tahoe we had never heard before. The pictures are beautiful and true to the real place. The kids asked so many questions from the pictures that it was great that all the answers were available in the pages. We are now interested in visiting specific sites and participating in certain activites because of the thorough information and history covered in this book. Anyone interested in the history of the Lake Tahoe area should give this book a read!
